Community Events

In 2007 Owen Sound experienced its first-ever rural technology conference. The speakers showcased the local use of technology. From cattle breeding through to public health, HICK Tech helped the local community to see a wide range of ways its community has embraced technology. In 2008 HICK Tech raised the bar for technology conferences around the world. It was waste-free, carbon neutral and featured locally grown food (and beer) prepared by a local, gourmet restaurant. Speakers included Flickr's Community Manager, the Guardian's Head of Communities and User Experience. The wrap-up panel discussion was hosted by CBC's Nora Young.

Community Training

The Community Outreach for the Grey County Broadband Initative was conducted by Emma Hogbin. The one-hour presentation was both entertaining and informative and was very well received in the four communities it was presented. More information about the program, including the handout that was delivered is available on the Grey County Broadband Initiative Web site.

Community Training initiatives have also included speaking engagements within the broader technical community. Emma has delivered presentations at several international conferences on the successes of HICK Tech. The video recording of some of these presentations are available through their respective conference Web sites (LugRadioLive: San Francisco, NotACon: Cleveland, OH, LugRadioLive: Wolverhampton, UK and OSCON: Portland, OR). Emma has also conducted Web usability training for the City of Owen Sound and has taught Internet technologies at both Seneca College and Humber College.

Wouldn't you like to have a HICK Tech experience in your community too?
